RESPONSE ABILITY: A Call for Courage
In this keynote speech entitled, Mike is helping individuals from all walks of life understand how seizing upon an opportunity to act can dramatically change their community and allow them to demonstrate courage — for others, for organizations and for issues. He uses live polling and shares real stories to frame the discussion.
Many of today’s problem behaviors — bullying (on the playground and in the workplace), sexual violence (including harassment), fraud, corruption, alcohol/drug abuse, discrimination, and other everyday life issues — have witnesses. Many situations have those who see it or hear it…and do nothing. Many times, there are bystanders who are disempowered and scared — fears of retaliation and of sacrifice to quality of life, social stature, or well-being take over. Shame consumes us and determines what we will and will not do.
Mike is leading a call for courage to meet this critical need. Mike is the one to reveal this need to your audience and then empower them to show courage and make the difference they already want to make. Your audience members will leave educated, empowered and challenged to stand up, step in, and speak out for others and for what’s right.
Everyone benefits from this conversation — no matter their age or roles in life. Being a bystander is a human being phenomenon. The same goes for showing courage!
This keynote is perfectly suited for schools, organizations, communities and companies. Mike will do the work to customize his message for the demographic make-up of your event.
DignityU: Building Up or Tearing Down
In this keynote speech entitled, with The Creed for Dignity as its foundation, Mike empowers us all to make the decision in every interaction to honor the dignity of another human being.
We all come into the world equally valuable and worthy — and equally invaluable for our uniqueness. Regardless of background and capabilities, we share an innate need to be valued, acknowledged, listened to, treated fairly, and accepted for who we are. When we are not valued as such, we feel anger and frustration, often lashing out in exactly the wrong way to achieve the very thing we need and crave. Many of the world’s ills are rooted in this disconnect between what we need, what we do, and what we get in return.
As we confront inappropriate, abusive, and even violent behaviors on our campuses, in our companies, and in our society, there is always a violation of someone’s dignity at play — someone is left feeling less valuable and less worthy as a result. Each time, their glass of dignity is a little less full — they have less life, less joy, and less confidence.
In every interaction, we have the choice to honor or violate someone’s dignity. We have the choice to lift someone up or tear someone down. We have the choice to empty or fill their glass.
The key take-aways from this keynote are the ten essential elements of dignity, as distinguished by Dr. Donna Hicks, renowned expert on the subject and consultant to DignityU.
It is time to educate and empower ourselves — and others — to always make the right choice and honor dignity.
